5 Minutes With... David Windler, The Mortgage Supply Co.

Having a sporting background as a professional cricket coach, Windler says he'd watch two cockroaches race if it was on Sky Sport.

David Windler of The Mortgage Supply Co. says the change he would like to see in the industry is mortgage advisers with a united voice.

Years in industry: 10  Location: Auckland

Why did you get into mortgage broking?
I took a big career jump into banking having spent most of my working life as a professional cricket coach and picked up a role as a mobile manager with the BNZ. It gave me a passion for what I do now but with those typical corporate restrictions. I couldn’t resist the chance to go into business for myself.

How would you sum up mortgage advisers in three words?
Borrowers best friend

What advice would you give to a new mortgage adviser?
Work hard, work smart and stick at it.

How would you change the industry?
We desperately need a united voice. Mortgage advisers have been swallowed up within the PAA and there is a distinct lack of understanding from consumers about what we do or that we even exist.

What’s the most important thing an adviser can do to develop their business?
Do a great job with every opportunity you get……and then ask for the referral

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Never be afraid to ask for someones business. The worst they will do is say no. They ain't going to pull a gun and shoot you!

If you were Prime Minister for one day, what would you do?
Pull some pigtails

What has been the highlight of your career?
Any time I’ve saved someone’s house from mortgagee sale

What’s your favoured style of coffee?
The one I have first thing in the morning with a ciggie. #cantfunctionwithoutit

Union, league, soccer or other?
All of it. I’d watch two cockroaches race if it was on Sky Sport

If you could invite three people to dinner, dead or alive, and excluding family and friends, who would they be and why?
Stephen Fry, Steven Gerrard and Stephen Hawking. Then I'd drink a lot of wine and not get anyone's name wrong.

Complete this sentence:
If I wasn’t in mortgage broking, I would be…in insurance of course, all that lovely trail!
