Far out Friday: $170pw in rent for a bunk bed (sugar and salt included)

Rental prices appear to be getting out of hand as an ad on Trade Me askes $170/week for a bottom bunk in Auckland’s CBD.

With rental prices going up, securing yourself a space in Auckland’s CBD can be expensive, but one ad on TradeMe has gone a step further, asking $170 per week to share a bunk bed in a Queen St apartment in central Auckland, according to stuff.co.nz

The ad is seeking a "nice and tidy female flatmate, student and worker preferably" to join the three existing flatmates already in the apartment and there was also a second, cheaper option for a spot on a fold-out couch in the lounge of the same apartment.

The listing for the couch has since been removed from the site.

From the pictures, the small, shared room looks like it has just enough room for the bunk, a wardrobe and some shelves.

"It's a bunk-double bed that you'll sleep in the double bed at the bottom. A 20-year-old Japanese lady is staying on the single bed on the top," the advertisement states.

The ad calls for a four-week bond and one-week rent in advance, a total of $850 from the outset to secure the bunk bed.

The apartment includes free extras along with the bunk, specifically free internet, power and water, not to mention toilet tissues, laundry powder, fabric softener, salt, sugar, cook oil also included in the price.
