Mortgage First broker Sam Parsons tells us what his most memorable client experience is
Christchurch-based broker Sam Parsons of Mortgage First talks to NZ Adviser about what he does on his days off and what it’s like working for the family business.
Q: How many years have you been in the industry?
A: Officially two and a half years.
Q: Who or what has inspired you to become a broker?
A: I have always enjoyed dealing with people and had an interest in property. Watching my parents Rob and Vicki built their business (Mortgage First) over the past 21 years has been a huge inspiration.
Q: How would you sum up brokers in three words?
A: Determined. Experienced. Knowledgeable.
Q: What do you see as the biggest opportunity for brokers in 2018?
A: Embracing technology and industry changes and doing right by their existing clients.
Q: Why do you like being a financial adviser?
A: Helping people feels good!
Q: What’s your most memorable client experience?
A: Hard to pinpoint one, as there are a lot. A very stoic client once broke down with tears of joy and relief as I told them they were approved to buy their dream property. That was pretty special.
Q: If you could improve one thing about the industry what would it be? And why?
A: A centralised processing system for brokers and lenders that allow for faster turnarounds and better results for the industry as a whole.
Q: Outside the broking business, what else do you enjoy doing?
A: Any sport involving standing on something and going at speed (down a hill or across water), spending quality time with my other half, family and friends. I also enjoy making wooden things in the workshop and sipping a medium strength cup of tea.
Q: If you were the Prime Minister for one day, what would you do?
A: Throw in a few more public holidays.
Q: If you could have dinner with any three people (dead or alive, excluding family or friends), who would you invite and why?
A: Louis Theroux – because he seems an interesting fellow
Ricky Gervais – also an interesting fellow
Gordon Ramsay – because I love food, and who would serve mediocre food to a table where he’s seated?
Q: Complete this sentence: If I wasn’t in mortgage broking I would be…
A: retired.
