15-year high results were driven by stand-alone houses, says Stat NZ

Auckland home consents highest since 2002

Auckland has recorded 1,530 new home consents in May, the highest number since October 2002, according to new figures from Statistics NZ.

“Auckland consented more new homes in May 2018 than in any other month in over 15 years,” Construction statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said. “Almost half the new homes were stand-alone houses, with apartments and townhouses driving growth in recent months.”

The report shows 710 new stand-alone houses, 419 apartments, 258 townhouses, flats, and units, and 143 retirement village units were consented in Auckland for the current reporting period. In comparison, the October 2002 peak of 1,945 new homes consented in Auckland came mainly from 1,206 apartments.

Stat NZ said Auckland boosted the national total to 3,407 new homes consented – the highest monthly number since 3,447 were consented across the country in June 2004.

Across New Zealand, the total number of new homes consented for the year ended in May rose a seasonally adjusted 7.1%, following a 3.6% fall in April 2018. For houses only, the seasonally adjusted number rose 6.5 percent to a total of 32,628 new homes consented – up 6.5% from the May 2017 year. In Auckland, 12,274 new homes were consented – up 18% from the year ended May 2017.
