First KiwiBuild homes in Northland unveiled

The government has announced ten new KiwiBuild homes in Northland, and they are now up for sale.

To be built in Kotātā Heights, Whangarei, the KiwiBuild homes are a combination of two and three bedroom brick, standalone homes with internal access garages, elevated and sunny outlooks, and semi-rural and harbour views. These are priced at $460,000 for a two-bedroom and $500,000 for a three-bedroom home.

The homes will be offered to eligible KiwiBuild buyers by direct sale, KiwiBuild Delivery head Helen O’Sullivan said. This means homebuyers can start the process of immediately and won’t have to go through a ballot. Additionally, the government had aligned the caps for HomeStart grants with KiwiBuild price caps in December so KiwiBuild buyers may be eligible for up to $20,000 towards their deposit, she noted.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development noted Whangarei house prices rose 10% in the past year, one of the fastest rates of increase in the country. The city’s population is reportedly growing by nearly two thousand people a year. The average house price in the city is at $651,000.

“Whangarei needs affordable homes,” O’Sullivan said. “KiwiBuild is working with private developers to build some of the most affordable new-builds in the city.

“Kotātā Heights provides a high-quality, centrally located, and affordable option for local first-time buyers, and for people who are considering moving to Whangarei for the lifestyle,” she added.

The first three KiwiBuild homes are nearly complete and the remaining seven are expected to be completed between now and June.
