Statistics NZ says there was a rise in consents issued in the year ended June 2017
The total number of new houses, townhouses and flats that were consented in the 12 months to June 2017 was 30,453, a rise of 4.7% from the previous 12 months.
But even with the rise, there will still be a supply shortage.
Annual new home numbers are nearing those last seen in 2004, although they remain well below the all-time peak of the mid-1970s when consents reached about 39,000 a year," prices, accommodation, and construction senior manager Jason Attewell said.
Auckland took the lion’s share of the new consents, 10,364 in total. That accounted for three quarters of consents for new apartment units and almost half of the consents for new townhouses and flats.
However, Auckland saw a decline in the number of consents issued for stand-alone houses.
Otago and Wellington saw sharp rises in consents over the year, rising 28% and 20% respectively.
Canterbury saw consents drop by 20% to 5,180 but the numbers have been declining over the past two years following the almost 7,000 in the year to June 2015 as rebuilding continued in the years following the 2011 earthquake.
For the single month of June 2017, consents were down by a seasonally-adjusted 1% following the 6.9% drop in the previous month.
The data shows a drop in consents for retirement village units in the Canterbury and Wellington regions, leading to a 25% drop nationwide to 1,651 units.
