Housing New Zealand to develop over 32,000 new Auckland homes

Crown agent Housing New Zealand Corporation (HNZC) is working with businesses to develop 32,600 new Auckland homes, 11,000 of which will be new state houses, while the rest are planned to fall under the affordable housing category.

This forms part of Housing New Zealand’s Auckland Housing Programme (AHP), which was launched in June 2016 and aims to deliver small, medium and large-scale housing developments in Auckland over the next ten years.

The areas of Northcote, Avondale, Mount Roskill and Mangere have been identified as high-need areas, and currently have several large projects underway.

“Housing New Zealand is making more efficient use of its land to increase the pace and scale of housing supply throughout New Zealand,” said HNZC asset development group general manager Patrick Dougherty. “To this end we’re building a variety of house types and sizes, and this includes stand-alone homes, duplexes, two and three-level walk-ups, terraced housing and apartments.”

“The type of housing planned for a particular property is determined on a site-by-site basis and dependent on a number of factors including demand in that neighbourhood, the nature of the site, planning rules, availability of infrastructure and support services,” Dougherty explained.

“The Auckland Architecture redevelopment in Mount Albert is a prime example of this, where we have built in an established suburb, and it displays innovative site planning and urban design values.”

Dougherty says the transformation is important given the state housing waiting list, which hit a four-year high in May of this year.
