KiwiBuild boss Stephen Barclay officially steps down

KiwiBuild boss Stephen Barclay officially steps down

The head of the government’s flagship KiwiBuild programme has officially resigned from the role.

Ministry of Housing chief executive Andrew Crisp received Barclay’s letter of resignation on January 18, Radio NZ reports. Crisp reportedly said he is “considering how this affects the employment process currently underway.”

Meanwhile, the resignation puts the KiwiBuild programme in crisis, ACT Leader David Seymour said in a statement.

“Phil Twyford can’t even manage his own department – how can we expect him to plan and build 100,000 new houses?” Seymour stated. “This is the danger of putting the government in charge of a massive house building programme.”

Seymour claims KiwiBuild will not add to the housing supply and will not solve the housing crisis. He challenges the Housing Minister to get “to the source of the housing crisis by tackling red tape, something he campaigned on in opposition.”

“The government was elected to solve the housing crisis,” Seymour added. “Nine months in, it is desperately failing.”
