Meth a concern for property owners

A Hamilton-based drug testing company says meth is a growing concern for property owners

Meth a concern for property owners
Methamphetamine contamination is a growing concern for property owners, according to the latest report from Resultz Group, a Hamilton-based alcohol and drug testing company.

“The problem with meth (P) contamination is a lot wider than the general public think,” Resultz Group managing director Kyly Coombes said.

“It is a real concern for property owners, and our testing services are increasingly in demand in this area.”

In the Waikato region, approximately 120 property meth tests were conducted and a quarter of those were discovered to be contaminated to some degree with meth (including seven at excessive levels), Resultz Group said. “That’s the reality, and it should be alarming for our community.”

Coombes said meth testing became essential for home buyers, property investors and landlords. He also said that the new standard for the testing and decontamination of meth-contaminated properties, released by the Standards New Zealand in June, will help weed “cowboys” from the industry.

“The new standard is important, as it means homeowners and investors will have greater assurance that the practices used to screen, test, assess and decontaminate methamphetamine-contaminated properties are carried out to a high standard,” Coombes said.

According to Resultz Group, property meth testing numbers for this financial year are projected to increase by 670 standard tests and 134 detailed assessments in the Waikato region.

“We have been so busy with requests to meth-test properties in the Waikato area alone that we’ve had to expand our operations, and have added three new testing technicians to our team,” said Coombes.
